Audi Sportback Concept: Evolutionary or revolutionary?</p><p>

First shown at the 2009 North American International Automobile Show last month, the Audi Sportback Concept is the most emotional and theatrical product Audi has released since the R8. Stylish, dramatic and technologically savvy, the Sportback Concept, aka the A7, fills a void in that Mercedes has always dominated with their CL and CLS – the Luxury Coupe segment. </p><p>
And not too far away is Porsche’s first four-door sports car in the Panamera. So for Audi, an all new A7 will be welcomed by enthusiasts with open arms. It sure was in Detroit where the atmosphere was dry and quiet and lacked the emotion of previous shows. The Sportback Concept was one of only a few vehicles that provoked eye contact from auto journalists and industry heads alike. </p><p>
So is a five-door sports car with a coupe like shadow going too far? No. The nine panels of glass which form the dome of the vehicle add openess that perceives more occupant freedom from the inside out. However, do not expect all the glass action to make it to the production stage. And as the old design adage goes, form definitely follows function. </p><p>
Quattro AWD and a 3.0-liter V6 TDI clean diesel engine is paired with large 10-spoke, 21-inch rims and a jagged edge body infused with Audi’s audacious grille are highlights of the Sportback design. Expect V6, V8 and maybe even V10 gasoline power for American enthusiasts.</p><p>
